Scams with checks

if a person/entity, with whom you are contracting for products/services/etc., mails you a check for an amount larger than what you’ve agreed on (for example, you are purchasing a product for $300, but you get a check for $2,500), and asks you to deposit the check, deduct the amount you’ve agreed on, and write the person/entity a check for the remaining amount and mail the person/entity the check, note that this is a scam. do not deposit that check! instead, inform usps/fedex/ups of that situation, as well as local law enforcement.
